“We have to resolve the issue of Islamophobia through a committed political dialogue and a historical reconciliation between Islam and the West,” Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said.

He said when the leaders of the 57 member states meet in Senegal on Thursday, March 13, they will discuss the first report of an Islamophobia monitoring committee, OIC secretariat said in a press release.

The OIC chief cited an urgent necessity for the international community to either strengthen the existing international legal instruments or enact new ones to include preventive measures against insulting or offending religious values and sentiments, the secretariat said.

De reclamecampagne is vormgegeven rondom het concept van de ‘Liberation Army Against Freedom‘, een Arabisch aandoende paramilitaire groepering waarvan de lotgevallen ons moeten wijzen op de gevaren die aan het afsteken van vuurwerk kleven. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het L.A.A.F. vooral een persiflage op Hamas of Al-Qa’ida, maar bij nadere inspectie bijkt dat de hele beeldtaal precies onze houding tegenover dergelijke groeperingen communiceert.

Allereerst de website, waarop de verschillende reclamespotjes te zien zijn. Het beeldmateriaal op de achtergrond bestaat uit een collage van L.A.A.F. strijders in verschillende poses, gelardeerd met Arabische tekst (die het grootste deel van de doelgroep uiteraard niet lezen kan) en Engelse spelfouten, zoals “explosing instructions”, “sounds on/of”, die het geheel in ‘authentiek’ gevoel geven. Arabische verzetsstrijders maken namelijk constant spelfouten, hetgeen ze automatisch ‘dom’ doet overkomen. De achtergrondmuziek van goedkope MIDI-instrumenten met ‘Arabische’ zang en ‘slechte’ opnamekwaliteit maakt de knulligheid helemaal af. Het L.A.A.F. identificeert zichzelf verder als volgt:

“L.A.A.F. was founded as splinter cel in 1957 by SHEIKH ABDULLAH YUSSIN of Left Wing of Goriam Fighters at begining of First Fight Against Freedom. L.A.A.F. calls for extermination of roots of freedoms worldwide with the aid of great fireworks.”

In deze beschrijving presenteert het L.A.A.F. zich niet ‘bevrijdingsbeweging’ of ‘bestrijder van het Westerse kwaad’, zoals gewoonlijk is in bijvoorbeeld Hamas communiqués, maar juist zeer specifiek als bestrijders van vrijheid, met andere woorden, precies zoals het neoconservatieve Westen hen zou willen definiëren: de targets van ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’. Voorts bevestigt de beschrijving van L.A.A.F. ons beeld van het Midden-Oosten als een ondoordringbaar amalgaam van verschillende splintergroeperingen en afscheidingen, die voor ons slechts te vatten is onder de noemer ‘strijders tegen vrijheid’.

Het L.A.A.F. presenteert zichzelf dus als de Arabische verzetsgroep, zoals het westen een Arabische verzetsgroep ziet: het is een representatie van de liberale Westerse gaze op het Midden-Oosten. Het feestvieren met wapens, moedig altijd klaar voor de strijd, feestvierend of rouwend door de straten van willekeurige kapotgeschoten steden. Dit principe van de Westerse, tolerante, multiculturele gaze op het Midden-Oosten, wordt beschreven in Slavoj Zizek’s essay ‘Multiculturalism’:

“[C]ontemporary ‘postmodern’ racism is the symptom of multiculturalist late-capitalism, bringing to light the inherent contradiction of the liberal-democratic project. Liberal ‘tolerance’ condones the folklorist Other deprived of its substance – like the multitude of ‘ethnic cuisines’ in a contemporary megalopolis (cf. Shoarmazaken en falafeltentjes); however, any ‘real’ Other (cf. Arabische milities) is instantly denounced for its ‘fundamentalism’, because the kernel of Otherness resides in the regulation of its jouissance (cf. het ongelimiteerde plezier van de strijd, rouw, etc.): the ‘real Other’ is always ‘patriarchal’, ‘violent’, never the Other of ethereal wisdom and charming costums.”

De ingreep die Selmore in de werkelijkheid pleegt, namelijk door bij het L.A.A.F. het ‘normale’ wapentuig door vuurwerk te vervangen in de gemedieerde fictie die wij creëren rondom Arabische verzetsgroepen, duidt precies het “postmoderne racisme” van Zizek: Hamas, Al-Aqsa en Al-Qa’ida voeren geen daadwerkelijke ‘degelijke’ oorlog, maar zijn verwikkeld in een constante exuberante viering van geweld en terreur, een viering die in onze maatschappij slechts beperkt, gecontroleerd en geordend kan plaatsvinden, zonder exces en slechts één dag per jaar.
